Neil Tennant: 'X Factor too narrow'

Neil Tennant has criticised The X Factor for being too narrow in its musical outlook.

The Pet Shop Boy told the BBC that he watched the show to see Cheryl Cole's judging performance after writing a song for Girls Aloud.

Tennant said: "[It's] basically people singing Whitney, Mariah and maybe Elton. Why don't they have, say, a new-wave week? Or '80s electro week?

"If it's not power ballads then it was a narrower version of disco. What bugs me is that Simon Cowell's idea of pop music is so narrow."

He added that Pop Idol was no better, with Pete Waterman rejecting a singer for sounding like Depeche Mode.

The Pet Shop Boys will receive the outstanding contribution to music prize at this year's Brit Awards.
